Radiant I – 1956 – Inland Steel Building – Chicago (IL)

Leigh Block, president of Inland Steel Company, commissioned Lippold to create Radiant I: the first abstract structure in Chicago for the first stainless steel skyscraper in the city.

Stretched over a pool between floor and ceiling, a group of red, gold and silver wires support a radiant stainless steel form.

The Inland Steel Building was designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

The building and the sculpture were awarded landmark status by the Commission of Chicago Landmarks in 1998.
