Flying Emeralds – 1990 – The Emerald Plaza Building, San Diego

Built in 1990 and designed by architect C.W. Kim, the iconic The Emerald Plaza Building is San Diego’s most distinctive building to shape its skyline. The Flying Emeralds sculpture (now removed) was hanging in the center’s 100 foot high glass atrium. It has five hanging elements, each hexagonal in shape and resembling a metallic oriental lantern. Hanging from the outside of each element are long hexagonal prisms made of polished aluminium and hanging from the inside are sheets of emerald green acrylic.
